Meeting Voters at the Right Time and Place
Vice President Kamala Harris is notoriously selective when it comes to her interviews. So, sure, she’s sitting down to talk to 60 Minutes (her opponent backed out) along the campaign trail, but she also appeared on the Call Her Daddy podcast Oct. 6.
A podcast!
The show, hosted by Millennial influencer Alex Cooper, is popular with younger women—who are unlikely to watch 60 Minutes on network television. Their discussion focused on women’s rights and healthcare and getting the government out of our underwear, which are subjects extremely relevant and personal to the target demographic. Cooper’s podcast, the most popular among women, is second only overall to Joe Rogan, who has not invited the former president for this election cycle.
Harris was in the right place with the right tech with the right specific message. Not only did listeners tune in to Harris and Cooper’s conversation on their phones, but they also could catch the interview on Instagram and YouTube (where, weirdly, the opposing campaign placed pre-video ads. They could have just left that money in the middle of the street and it would have gone to better use.)
Naomi May put it well in a story for Elle: “Because Call Her Daddy, which is aimed at a female audience, averages 5 million weekly listeners and with nearly 89 million women registered to vote in this year's presidential election, women make up the largest, and arguably the most influential, voting bloc in the US. Harris' interview with Cooper is her way of attempting to ensure that women feel heard, seen and represented.”
