Zoom Zoom Zooma Zoom
We understand if you don’t get this Zoom reference, it was the song from a kid’s show in the 1970s. Back then, Zoom had a couple different meanings, but talking on a computer screen to each other wasn’t one of them.
We live at the intersection of technology and communications because because we understand that innovation is the way to move any enterprise forward. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the political realm. From FDR and JFK’s use of the radio and television, effective leaders are able to find uses new technologies in unexpected ways to appeal to a mass audience.
This year is no different. In the past, the most important technology for a candidate who wanted to organize their coalition was shoe leather. Meetings needed to be organized locally with all communications going strictly one way - from the candidate to each constituent group. It was a wholesale process.
Video conference calling has changed that model forever, and the Kamala Harris campaign is taking full advantage. According to Politico, as of August 2 “The Harris campaign said those coalition calls, including Black Women for Harris, Latinas for Harris, and White Dudes for Harris, raised more than $20 million.” most of it from “first time donors.” Instead of having to cut ads and create mailers, her campaign is mobilizing her coalition from their desktops.
We applaud this amazing use of existing tech and new communications from a promising new presidential candidate. This is how it’s done.
Using zoom has allowed her to organize her communication to her coalition efficiently, allowing each group to organize itself. This allows each group to have better ownership of their network and frees up the campaign to focus on growing the coalition.
New technologies open up new ways to communicate, allowing connections never before envisioned by the creators of those technologies. Video conferencing at scale has joined print, radio, television, and social media as a communications channel between enterprises and the public. Are you using it effectively for your company?
